On February 6, 2011, former BMW Sauber F1 driver and present Renault F1 driver Robert Kubica suffered a huge and dangerous crash while driving in the Ronde di Andora rally. Photos of the crash showed that the Armco barrier that Kubica crashed into had penetrated the car's (a Skoda Fabia) footwell and almost severed his right hand. He was said to have been trapped in the wreckage for over an hour.
The near fatal crash left him with arm and leg fractures along with a partially severed right hand. Kubica was considered to be lucky to have survived the crash but the initial reports suggested that he was in danger of losing his hand and hence hinted at the end of career for the Polish driver who debuted in the 2006 Hungary Grand Prix.
